Located on the Atlantic coast of northwestern Liberia, Robertsport is an important port city and fishing center in the country, about 120 kilometers from the capital city of Monrovia. Founded in the mid-19th century by the American Colonization Society and named after Liberia's first president, Joseph Jenkins Roberts, the city retains colonial architecture, such as the old stone church and wharf. The economy is based on fishing and trade, and the surrounding waters are rich in tuna and shrimp, which are the main livelihood of the local population.
