Lalibela is a small historic city in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, famous for its 11 rock churches, which were hewn by order of King Lalibela between the late 11th and 13th centuries. These churches were carved entirely out of monolithic red rock, including the famous St. George's Church, known as the "Eighth Wonder of the World" and listed as a World Heritage Site in 1978. At an altitude of about 2,600 meters above sea level, the city enjoys a pleasant climate and is an important holy place for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, attracting a large number of believers and tourists every year. Its unique architectural skills and deep religious culture make it one of the most historically valuable cities in Africa.
