Located in the north of the Cape Verdean island of Santiago, Ribeira da Cruz is the first capital and oldest surviving settlement of Cape Verde, founded by Portuguese colonizers in 1462. Famous for its distinctive colonial architecture, cobblestone streets and the ruins of a 16th century cathedral, this historic city was inscribed on the World Heritage List in Danger in 1985.
The city is surrounded by mountains and the sea, with black sand beaches and volcanic landscapes. The local Creole culture is a blend of African and Portuguese traditions, with distinctive music, dance and handicrafts. As an important transit point during the slave trade, the city retains historical monuments such as the Royal Fortress and the Pelourinho Stonehenge.
In recent years, monuments such as the fortress of San Felipe have been systematically restored through a restoration project supported by UNESCO. Tourists can participate in cultural hiking routes and visit traditional markets and seafood restaurants. The city serves as a central node for Cape Verdean cultural tourism and attracts a large number of history lovers every year.
