Kalkin is a small city in Badakhshan Province in northeastern Afghanistan, located in the hinterland of the Hindu Kush Mountains, near the border with Tajikistan, and is one of the major settlements in the remote mountainous areas of the region. The city has a high altitude and a cold climate, and its inhabitants are predominantly Tajiks who are mainly engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry and traditional handicrafts, such as carpet weaving. Due to its remote location, the infrastructure is relatively weak, but the area retains a unique Pamir culture and simple folkways. Surrounded by mountains and valleys, Kalkin has magnificent natural scenery, and is a window to experience Afghan village life, as well as a small trading center connecting villages in the surrounding mountains.
