With a population of about 10,000, the city's economy is based on agriculture, light industry and small and medium-sized enterprises, and in recent years it has developed eco-tourism based on its natural landscape. The local culture retains the traditional character of Voruma, with folk music, crafts and festivals. The surrounding area is highly forested, with lakes and rivers, making it an ideal destination for hiking, cycling and winter sports. Conveniently located about 150 kilometers from the university town of Tartu, it provides an important gateway for visitors to explore the natural and cultural heritage of southeastern Estonia.
