Pathum Thani is located in central Thailand, north of Bangkok Metropolitan Area, about 30 kilometers from the center of Bangkok, and is an important satellite city of the capital city, as well as a center of education and technology. The district is situated in a tributary of the Chao Phraya River and has a tropical monsoon climate with flat topography and hot and humid climate. As the capital of Pathum Thani Province, the district is known as "Thailand's University City" because of its high concentration of universities and colleges, including the Asian University of Science and Technology and Lansdowne University. Economically, in addition to traditional agriculture, the convenient transportation location has attracted a large number of technology parks and manufacturing enterprises, such as Navanakorn Industrial City, an important industrial hub in northern Thailand.
