Although the city is small, it has a good market and educational facilities, and is the distribution center of agricultural products and the center of life for the residents in the surrounding area. Palombe's inhabitants are predominantly Chichewa, and the city has a strong cultural atmosphere, with traditional music and dance still retaining a distinctive ethnic character in local festivals.
