Its tranquil atmosphere and rich historical heritage make it a highly sought-after residential and tourist destination in the Upcountry region of South Carolina.
Hog Harbour, located on the northern tip of the island of Espiritu Santo in the Republic of Vanuatu in the Southwest Pacific, is an important coastal village and natural harbor. Its name derives from the herds of wild boars found there by early European explorers. The area is known for its pristine tropical scenery with black sand beaches, coral reefs and dense coconut groves, making it a hidden destination for diving and eco-tourism.
With its backdrop of volcanic hills facing the Pacific Ocean, Hog Harbor's surrounding waters are rich in marine life, including schools of tropical fish and sea turtles. The land is covered with pristine rainforests that are rich in crops such as coconuts and kava. The local area retains a traditional Melanesian tribal culture, with villagers making a living from fishing and subsistence agriculture. Visitors can experience unique tribal ceremonies and handicraft making.
The island of Espiritu Santo can be reached from Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, by small plane or boat, and then overland to Pig Harbor. Key activities include wreck diving (e.g. the wreck of the SS President Coolidge), rainforest hiking and traditional village visits. The best time to travel is during the dry season from May to October; note that infrastructure is rudimentary and it is advisable to contact a local guide in advance.
