Famagusta is a historic city on the east coast of Cyprus, once known as the 'Venice of the East' and famous for its magnificent Venetian walls, medieval churches and Ottoman architecture. As an important trading port in ancient times, it was a fusion of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Latin cultures, with the Cathedral of St. Nicholas and the Lalla Mustafa Mosque (formerly St. Sophia's Cathedral) in the Old City being architectural treasures, while the politically partitioned area in the southern part of the Cyprus-controlled part of the island after 1974 has retained its ancient features, attracting history buffs and tourists alike to explore its millennia-old history. Today, Famagusta is not only a cultural symbol of Cyprus, but also a unique destination on the Mediterranean coast that combines history and seaside charm.
