Tarawa, the capital of Kiribati, is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and consists of a number of coral islands that are the political, economic and cultural center of Kiribati. Located near the equator, this island nation is one of the first places in the world to welcome the New Year, with a unique geographical location and time zone advantage. Bonriki consists mainly of two parts, South Tarawa and North Tarawa, with a population of about 50,000, or nearly half of the country's total population. The local economy is dominated by fishing, copra exports and tourism, while facing serious existential challenges due to sea level rise, which has become the focus of global climate change concerns. As Kiribati's largest city, Bangriki is an important window into the island nation, blending traditional Pacific culture with modern urbanity.
