Nueva Germania, a small city in the central department of Paraguay, about 240 kilometers northeast of the capital, Asunción, was founded in 1886 by Bernardo Jäger, a German immigrant leader, with the aim of creating a "purely German-speaking community". Although the early colonial vision was not fully realized, the city still retains a strong German cultural identity: German is still spoken by some of the inhabitants, and traditional German architecture, pastry making and beer culture are evident. The economy is predominantly agricultural, producing soybeans, cotton and citrus, and in recent years it has also attracted tourists through culture to explore its unique colonial history and European flavor. As the epitome of Paraguay's multiculturalism, Nueva Hermannia witnessed the influence of 19th-century European immigrants in South America, making it one of the most popular destinations for history buffs and cultural travelers.
