Founded in the 18th century, the city's early economy was based on agriculture and crafts, and then industrialized in the 19th century with the development of the railroad, and now has manufacturing, retail, and community services as its core industries. With a population of approximately 18,000, the city is a small but vibrant city with several community parks, locally owned stores, and annual community events (such as summer concerts and holiday parades), making it a representative of Delaware's livable cities and towns. Its proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Philadelphia and New York, along with its convenient transportation network, has also attracted some commuters to settle in the area.
