Overview of Navala, Fiji

Navala is a traditional village in the mountainous interior of the island of Viti Levu, Fiji, located in the upper valley of the Ba River. As the only settlement in Fiji that has retained its traditional thatched cottage complexes intact, Navala is renowned for its cultural uniqueness and has been described as "Fiji's last thatched cottage village".

Architectural and Cultural Features

Over 200 houses in the village are built using natural materials, with thatched roofs and woven bamboo walls, a construction technique that has been practiced for centuries. The elliptical thatched houses called "bure" are a living fossil of traditional Fijian architecture, reflecting the wisdom of harmonious coexistence between man and nature. The villagers maintain a tribal way of life, with kava ceremonies, traditional songs and dances and handicrafts still being important daily activities.

Travel and Transportation

Kawa is a 2-3 hour mountainous 4WD drive from Nadi or Lautoka, Fiji's main cities. Visitors can experience tribal welcoming ceremonies, hike rainforest waterfalls and participate in activities such as craft making. Due to its remote and unspoiled location, Navarra is considered a must-visit for an in-depth experience of traditional Fijian culture, but its infrastructure is relatively simple and it is recommended that trips be arranged through a local tour operator.
