Founded in 1536, the city was once an important stronghold of Spanish colonization. The old town retains many colonial buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries, such as the Church of San Sebastian and the Colonial Governor's Palace, and exudes a strong sense of history with its quaint stone streets and whitewashed facades. Close to the World Heritage Site of Copan Mayan Ruins, Namasig is at the forefront of exploring the Mayan civilization, and is surrounded by cloudy rainforests and spectacular waterfalls that attract both history buffs and nature explorers.
