Located in the Horn of Africa and bordered by the Red Sea to the east, Eritrea is one of the youngest countries in Africa, having gained independence in 1993. The capital, Asmara, is the political and economic center of the country, at an altitude of more than 2,300 meters above sea level, and is famous for its unique colonial architecture, known as the "capital of African modernist architecture", which was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. The city's pleasant climate and clean streets are a blend of Italianate style and indigenous African features, making it a window into the country's multiculturalism. Eritrea's official languages are Tigrinya and Arabic, and its economy is based on agriculture, but in recent years it has been developing tourism.
Saint-Pierre is the capital and largest city of the French overseas collectivity of Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, located in the North Atlantic Ocean near the Canadian island of Newfoundland, and is the political, economic and cultural center of the archipelago. The city has a population of about 5,000, which is the majority of the total population of the archipelago, with French as the official language and the euro as the lingua franca. The economy is based on fishing (lobster, cod, etc.) and tourism, and the city's architecture is a blend of French style and maritime features, with a strong port town atmosphere, making it a gateway to explore the French overseas territories in the North Atlantic.
