Located at the mouth of the Rio de la Plata, Montevideo is the political, economic and cultural center of the country, with a population of about 1.3 million, accounting for nearly one-third of the country's total population. The coastal city has a UNESCO-recognized Historic Old Town, which retains its colonial architecture and harbor atmosphere; the long La Costa Beach is a popular place for recreation, and is known as the "Riviera of South America". As one of the safest cities in South America, Montevideo is a blend of European flavor and local culture, with a strong beef and wine industry that attracts many tourists every year to experience its relaxed pace of life and unique port culture.
