As one of the largest atolls in the RMI, its name "Mili" means "peace" in the Marshallese language, reflecting the serenity of the local natural environment.

History and Cultural Heritage

Mili Atoll was occupied by the Japanese during World War II and was used as a military base. Remnants of the war such as gun emplacements and airplane wreckage remain today. The inhabitants of the atoll rely primarily on fishing and subsistence agriculture, and traditional canoe-making and navigation skills are listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage, reflecting the unique resilience of Micronesian civilization.

Due to global sea level rise, the atolls are facing environmental challenges such as coastal erosion and freshwater shortages.
