Messene, located in the region of Messinia in the southwestern Peloponnese, Greece, is the site of an important city-state in Ancient Greece, founded in 369 BC by Epaminondas, a general of Thebes, in order to counter Spartan hegemony. The ancient city is famous for its well-preserved wall system, which is about 9 kilometers long, some of which are still as high as 3 meters, and contains towers and gates, demonstrating the mastery of ancient Greek military defense architecture. The site also contains the remains of the Ancient Greek Stadium, the Temple of Asclepius, the Agora (marketplace), etc. The stadium could hold tens of thousands of spectators, witnessing the prosperity of ancient Greek sports culture. Messini is not only an important site for the study of the ancient Greek city-state system and urban planning, but also a perfect blend of history and nature in the Peloponnese region, attracting many history lovers and tourists to visit.
