McFarland is a small city in the Wabaunsee County subdivision of the U.S. state of Kansas, located in the northeastern part of the state. According to the 2020 census data, there are only about 200 residents in the area, making it a typical rural community. The city is located about 30 miles from the state capital of Topeka, and the surrounding area is dominated by agricultural landscapes and natural beauty.
Founded in the late 1800s and named after an early settler, McFarland was historically based on railroad transportation and agriculture as the backbone of its economy. Today it retains a peaceful atmosphere of Midwestern living, with the Connecticut River running nearby for outdoor activities such as fishing and hiking. The city is small but has a good infrastructure, with easy access to neighboring towns via major highways.
The climate is continental, with four distinct seasons of cold winters and warm summers. McFarland represents the typical characteristics of a rural Kansas community - low population density, strong community ties and traditional Midwestern American values.
