Matherville (Mattoon) is a city in Kerr County, Illinois, United States, located in the east-central region of the state, about 70 miles east of the state capital, Springfield. The city covers an area of about 24 square kilometers and has a population of about 18,000 (2020 data), making it a commercial and transportation hub for the region.
Founded in 1855, Matherville sprang up as a result of railroad development and remains an important railroad interchange. The economy is dominated by manufacturing, health services and retail, with a large train repair facility and several medical centers.
