Located in the center of the West African country of Mali, along the River Niger, Mali Marsala is an important hub of commerce and culture on the edge of the Sahara Desert. This historic city is a blend of Berber, Bantu and other ethnic cultures, with traditional architecture featuring mud-brick mosques and open-air markets, and preserving the old Sankarani River port. The region is known for its handicrafts, especially pottery, leatherwork and indigo-dyed fabrics, which attracts travelers from all over the region.
