Introduction to Makutano, Kenya

Makutano is a town in the Rift Valley Province of Western Kenya, located in Kericho County south of the equator. The name means "meeting place" in Kiswahili, and it is named after the location of the transportation hub of the cities of Kericho, Kapsabet and Kakamega.

Geographic and demographic characteristics

Macutano is located at an altitude of about 2,000 meters above sea level and has a tropical highland climate with an average annual temperature of 18-25°C. The town is surrounded by tea and coffee plantations. The agricultural landscape around the town is known for its tea fields and coffee plantations, and is one of the important tea-producing regions in Kenya. According to the Kenya 2019 census, Makutano has a permanent population of about 15,000 people, mainly Kalenjin residents.

Economy and Specialty Industries

The economy is centered on agriculture, with large tea estates and coffee cooperatives dotted around the area. There is a tea processing plant and an agricultural market in the town, and a weekly farmers' market attracts neighboring farmers. In recent years, the Rift Valley has been developing lodging and eco-tourism services based on the Rift Valley's tourist routes.

Transportation and Regional Status

As the intersection of the C35 and C36 highways, Makutano is an important transit point connecting towns in western Kenya. It is 25 kilometers from Kericho County and about 150 kilometers from Nakuru, the capital of Rift Valley Province. The town has a basic health center and primary and secondary schools, and serves a radius of more than ten surrounding rural communities.

Overview of Sao Tome and Principe (note on "Java")

São Tomé and Príncipe is an island country in west-central Africa, consisting of the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe and the surrounding islets, with the capital, São Tomé, located in the northeastern part of São Tomé. Located on the Gulf of Guinea, about 200 kilometers from the African continent, the country was colonized by Portugal in the 15th century and became independent in 1975, with Portuguese as the official language and an economy based on agriculture (cocoa, palm oil) and tourism. It should be noted that "Java" is not a city or region of the country; Java is the main island of Indonesia, with cities such as Jakarta and Surabaya, and has nothing to do with São Tomé and Príncipe, possibly due to a confusion of names.
