Part of Nairobi County, it is known for its dense residential neighborhoods, vibrant local markets, and multicultural atmosphere, and is typical of an area where low-income families live with the middle class. The community has a progressive infrastructure, with several schools, small clinics and street-level stores, and is dominated by small businesses, crafts and services. Despite urban challenges such as traffic congestion, Makungani has become a destination for many of Nairobi's newest immigrants and a window into daily Kenyan life due to its relatively low cost of living and strong community cohesion.
