Introduction to Makeyevka, Ukraine

Makeyevka is a major industrial city in the Donetsk Oblast of eastern Ukraine, located about 15 kilometers north of the city of Donetsk. Founded in the late 19th century, the city grew rapidly due to the development of coal resources and became one of the core industrial centers of the Donbass region. The population is about 340,000 (2021 estimate), with Russian as the main daily language.

Economic and Industrial Characteristics

The economy of Makeyevka is dominated by heavy industry, with large metallurgical plants, machine-building enterprises and coal mines. Among them, the Makeryevka Metallurgical Combine is an important steel production base in Europe. In recent years the economy has been challenged by the conflict in the Donbass region, which has resulted in the destruction of industrial facilities.

Culture and city's current situation

The city has retained its Soviet-era industrial architecture and is home to educational institutions such as the Technical University, which has been on the front line of the armed conflict since 2014, causing severe damage to its infrastructure and the displacement of a large number of its inhabitants. The region is currently under the de facto control of the Donetsk People's Republic and the security situation remains unstable.
