Maplaka is a major city in the Eastern Province of the West African country of Sierra Leone, situated in the Eastern Highlands region of the country, near the Guinean border. As the capital of Koinadugu District, the city is a regional administrative, commercial and transportation hub with a population of about 150,000 people.
Maplaka is located in the eastern savannah climate zone of Sierra Leone, with distinct wet and dry seasons and an average annual temperature of about 27°C. The city is surrounded by a hilly terrain. The hilly terrain surrounding the city is rich in forests and agricultural land, and the main river, the Koyna, provides an important source of water for the region.
