Maracaibo, the capital of Venezuela's Zulia State and the country's second largest city, is located on the western shore of Lake Maracaibo and is known as the "Oil Capital of South America". As the core of Venezuela's oil industry, the surrounding area is rich in oil resources, and the city's economy is based on oil extraction, refining and related industries. Lake Maracaibo is connected to the Caribbean Sea through a natural waterway, making it an important port city with a well-developed trade and logistics industry.
