The city is situated on the Mediterranean coast, with beautiful bays and sandy beaches, and is a famous tourist resort in Tunisia.
La Marsa is located in the Mediterranean climate zone, with warm, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The city stretches along the coastline with several natural bays, such as the famous Gammarth Bay, and is surrounded by hills, where the natural landscape complements the city's architecture.

The city has tourism as its core industry, with high-end resorts, beachfront restaurants and water sports facilities. The local handicraft market is famous for its traditional pottery and weaving, and is also an important residential and commercial area due to its proximity to the Tunisian capital.
