Hobart (Jovellanos) is an important city in the Cuban province of Matanzas, located about 150 kilometers east of the capital Havana. Named after the 19th-century Spanish statesman, the Count of Hobart, the city is a commercial and transportation hub in the agricultural region of western Cuba, with a population of about 45,000 people.
Hovabo retains a strong colonial architectural style, with colorful Spanish houses and old churches visible around the central plaza. The cultural life of the area is heavily influenced by African and Spanish traditions, and the vibrant music festivals and dance events held each year make it an ideal place to experience Cuban folklore.
The economy is based on sugar and tobacco cultivation and animal husbandry, and the surrounding area is dotted with fertile farmland. Visitors can tour the remains of local sugar mills, experience farm life, or head to the nearby Camaguey Keys coast to enjoy the natural beauty.
