The city was founded in 1948 as a planned city built during the Soviet period to support the development of heavy industry, and was named after the medieval Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli. An important industrial center, Rustavi was once known for its steel and chemical industries, and in recent years has been gradually transforming into a diversified economy.
