São Tomé and Príncipe is an island country in west-central Africa, consisting of the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe and the surrounding islets, with the capital, São Tomé, located in the northeastern part of São Tomé. Located on the Gulf of Guinea, about 200 kilometers from the African continent, the country was colonized by Portugal in the 15th century and became independent in 1975, with Portuguese as the official language and an economy based on agriculture (cocoa, palm oil) and tourism. It should be noted that "Java" is not a city or region of the country; Java is the main island of Indonesia, with cities such as Jakarta and Surabaya, and has nothing to do with São Tomé and Príncipe, possibly due to a confusion of names.
San Mateo is located in the central part of the San Francisco Bay Area in the U.S. state of California and is the county seat of San Mateo County. The city is bordered by San Francisco to the north and the core of Silicon Valley to the south, with a total area of approximately 41.3 square kilometers and a resident population of approximately 100,000 people. As an important commercial and residential center in the Bay Area, San Mateo is known for its multicultural community and high quality school district.
Located on the coastal plain of the Peninsula, about 5 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, San Mateo has a Mediterranean climate with cool, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The city has several parks and trail systems, such as Coyote Lake and Laurelwood Park, which provide residents with an abundance of outdoor recreational space.
The city's economy is anchored by the technology, financial and healthcare industries, which have attracted companies such as Sony Interactive Entertainment and Rakuten to set up headquarters. Downtown San Mateo is home to a large number of retail and dining establishments, as well as one of the largest Japanese cultural centers in the Bay Area, reflecting its significant Asian cultural influence.
Transportation is provided by Interstate 101 and the Carlstadt Railroad, which runs north and south, and the San Francisco International Airport is only 15 minutes away. Educational resources include the nationally ranked San Mateo High School series of campuses, as well as the adjoining College of San Mateo, forming a comprehensive education system.
