São Tomé and Príncipe is an island country in west-central Africa, consisting of the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe and the surrounding islets, with the capital, São Tomé, located in the northeastern part of São Tomé. Located on the Gulf of Guinea, about 200 kilometers from the African continent, the country was colonized by Portugal in the 15th century and became independent in 1975, with Portuguese as the official language and an economy based on agriculture (cocoa, palm oil) and tourism. It should be noted that "Java" is not a city or region of the country; Java is the main island of Indonesia, with cities such as Jakarta and Surabaya, and has nothing to do with São Tomé and Príncipe, possibly due to a confusion of names.
Demyansk (Демянск) is a town in the western part of the Novgorod Oblast, Russia, located in the Valdai Hills, at the confluence of the Bora and Yavoni rivers. It is located about 180 kilometers from the oblast capital Novgorod, has a population of about 5,000, and is the administrative center of the Demyansk District.
Demyansk was strategically important during World War II, when the Germans were surrounded by Soviet troops in 1942 in the famous "Siege of Demyansk". The battle, which lasted for several months, was the first successful case of large-scale airlift of supplies in the history of warfare, and provided an important reference for the study of subsequent military tactics. A World War II monument and a museum have been built in the town to commemorate this event.
The region has a temperate continental climate with cold, snowy winters and mild summers. The economy is dominated by forestry, agriculture and small-scale processing industries. The surrounding forests are rich in timber, such as pine and spruce. Traditional handicrafts such as wood carving and weaving are also preserved.
Demyansk is connected by road to the cities of Novgorod and Old Rusa, and there is no direct railroad connection. Tourist highlights include World War II sites, Orthodox churches and natural landscapes for history buffs and eco-tourists.
