Jamaame, Somalia

Jamaame is an important town in the Lower Juba region of southern Somalia, located along the lower reaches of the Juba River, about 20 kilometers from the Indian Ocean. As one of the core settlements in the Juba Valley, it has a hot and dry climate, but relies on the Juba River for irrigation, and has a well-developed agricultural industry that produces sorghum, maize, bananas, and cotton, making it one of the few food-producing areas in Somalia. With a predominantly Somali population and a traditional pastoralist and farming economy, the area is characterized by poor infrastructure but, because of its location on the main channel of the Juba River, it has historically served as a regional trading hub and remains a hub linking the interior with the coast.
