Hum is located in the north-central Croatia Istria Peninsula, Guinness World Records certified "the world's smallest city". This miniature ancient city has a population of only about 20-30 people, but has a complete urban structure and a thousand years of history. Its iconic stone-walled hilltop castle, built in 1102 as a medieval military fortress, still retains its Romanesque architecture.
The 12th-century church of St. Jerome, with its frescoes in Gothic and Renaissance styles, remains in the old town of Khoum. The traditional annual "Election of the Mayor of Khum", in which the inhabitants of Khum vote for their leader on wooden boards, is a unique folklore that has been practiced for centuries. At the entrance to the city, the stone boulevard "Glagolitic Alley" inscribes the history of Croatian writing in the ancient Glagolitic alphabet.
Visitors can walk through the main street, which is only 100 meters long, and visit the hand-forged silver jewelry workshop in Hum and taste the local specialty, Biska. It is a 2-hour drive from the capital Zagreb, and it is recommended to combine this with a visit to the nearby town of Rovin. The best time to visit is from May to September, when you can take part in the medieval-themed summer festivals.
Located in the northernmost tip of Yilan County, Taiwan Province of China, Toucheng is the oldest town in Yilan County, and was the first city of Kailan in the Qing Dynasty. Bordering the Pacific Ocean to the east, it boasts natural landscapes such as Turtle Island and Toucheng Beach, as well as humanistic sites such as the Old Street of Toucheng and Qingyuan Palace. Agriculture is based on rice, green onions and garlic, and fishing is well developed, with Wushi Harbor being an important fishing and sightseeing port. The Toucheng Orphan Robbery Folklore Event is held every year, which is classified as an important intangible cultural asset.
Toucheng is connected to New Taipei City in the north and Jiaoxi Township in the south, with the Yilan Line of the Taiwan Railway and National Highway No. 5 running through the whole area, and is about 50 minutes' drive from Taipei City, making it a popular sightseeing town in Northern Taiwan. The jurisdiction includes Turtle Island, which covers an area of about 100 square kilometers.
Toucheng integrates marine and humanistic tourism resources, where you can enjoy whales and dolphins on Gushan Island, experience surfing at Wushi Harbor, and appreciate the mixed architectural style of Toucheng's Old Street, as well as attractions such as the Dali Tien Kung Temple and the Lanyang Museum, which form a dynamic line of mountain, sea, and humanistic tourism.
