Located on the Gulf Coast in eastern Mexico, Veracruz is the capital of the state of Veracruz and one of Mexico's most important port cities. Founded in 1519 as the first town established by Spanish colonizers on the American continent, it is a blend of Indian, European and African cultures, with remnants of the colonial period such as the Castillo de San Juan de Ulloa surviving to this day. The city is known for its passionate Son Jarocho dance and fresh seafood, and its Caribbean flavor of street music and coffee. As Mexico's "Gateway to the East," the Port of Veracruz is responsible for nearly 60 percent of the country's import and export trade, making it an economically significant port, and attracting visitors from all over the world to explore its history and modernity through its unique cultural charms and seaside scenery.
