Located in the northern part of the province of San José in central Costa Rica, Poás is one of the country's most famous natural landmarks, and its centerpiece is the Poás Volcano National Park. The park is home to the active volcano Poas, which has one of the largest craters in the world, with a diameter of 1.7 kilometers. At the bottom of the crater is a sulphuric acid lake that has a stunning bluish-green color due to acidic gases, and from which steam rises from time to time, making for a spectacular sight. Surrounded by dense cloud forests, the park is home to a rich variety of species including birds and mammals, making it a destination for eco-tourism and hiking enthusiasts. The best time to visit is during the dry season from December to April, when visibility is higher and visitors can follow the trail to the crater lookout to experience the majestic power of nature up close.
