With a population of around 55,000, the city has its roots in industry, once the center of the Finnish textile industry, but nowadays it has developed into a diversified industrial system covering machine building, metalworking and other areas. The city center is home to the Finnish Railway Museum, the only train museum in Finland, and the surrounding forests and lakes provide plenty of space for outdoor activities. The city's infrastructure, education and healthcare resources combine industrial dynamism with a quiet and pleasant living atmosphere, making it one of the most important satellite cities in southern Finland.
