Haiyuan County, Ningxia: A New Post-Earthquake Landscape on the Ancient Silk Road and the Township of Selenium Melon

Located in the south-central part of Ningxia, under the jurisdiction of Zhongwei City, Haiyuan County is situated in the transition zone between the Loess Plateau and the Tengger Desert, and was an important post on the northern route of the ancient Silk Road. It is famous for the 1920 Haiyuan Earthquake (magnitude 8.5, one of the largest earthquakes in the world), and the remains of the Earthquake Ruins Park and the Zhenliu have witnessed the geological changes, making it an important base for the popularization of geological science. In agriculture, relying on the unique arid climate and sandy soil, it produces "selenium melon grown in the cracks of the stone", which is rich in selenium, sweet and refreshing, and is a national geographic indications product. As a Hui settlement, Haiyuan retains a strong Islamic flavor, mosques, traditional festivals are unique. In recent years, relying on ecological management and cultural tourism, Haiyuan is transforming from the "epicenter of the earthquake" to the ecological pearl of "South of the River on the Seas", combining a sense of historical importance with the vitality of development in the new era.

Introduction to Sevan, Armenia
