Groningen is an important city on the banks of the Suriname River in Suriname, about 50 kilometers south of the capital Paramaribo, and is the economic and cultural hub of the central region of Suriname. The city has a predominantly tropical rainforest climate, which is warm and humid all year round, and is surrounded by rich natural resources that support its core industries such as bauxite mining and rice cultivation. As a testament to the Dutch colonial period, Groningen has a unique blend of Dutch colonial architecture and Indian, Indonesian and African cultures.
