Gaalkacyo, the capital and largest city of the Puntland region in northeastern Somalia, is located in the center of the country, straddling the Nugaal and Mudug regions, and is one of the few regions in Somalia that is not under the full jurisdiction of the federal government but remains relatively stable. As the political and economic center of Puntland, Gaesaleh is located on the southern shore of the Gulf of Aden. Although it has no large deep-water port, it is still an important hub for trade between the interior and the coast, and is dominated by animal husbandry, camel breeding, and small-scale commerce. With a population of about 300,000 (including the surrounding refugee camps), it is a multi-ethnic region, with a culture that blends Somali traditions with Arab influences. Despite Somalia's long history of instability, Gaisale, with its relative security and strategic location, is a key node for Puntland's development and regional cooperation.
Same, the capital of Timor-Leste's Ainaro District, is located about 50 kilometers south of the capital, Dili, in the mountainous interior and is an important agricultural and transportation hub for the country. It is known for its coffee farming, surrounded by terraced fields that produce Timor-Leste's premium Arabica coffee beans. Historically, Samu was an important stronghold during Timor-Leste's War of Independence, and remnants of the resistance movement still remain in the area, attracting history buffs to explore. The surrounding area is rich in natural beauty and close to Mount Ramelau, Timor-Leste's highest peak, making it a stopover for hiking enthusiasts. A blend of traditional Timacu culture and modern townscape, Samu offers a unique look at the interior of Timor-Leste.
