Fort Sumner is a historic unincorporated community with a population of about 1,000 located in De Baca County in eastern New Mexico, United States. Known for its 19th-century military fort and the legend of Billy the Kid, the site was once used by the U.S. Army as a base to control the Navajo and Apache tribes. Today, Fort Sumner attracts visitors to historic sites such as the Fort Sumner State Monument and Billy the Kid Cemetery to experience the culture of the pioneer era of the American West.
