Fort Sumner is a historic unincorporated community with a population of about 1,000 located in De Baca County in eastern New Mexico, United States. Known for its 19th-century military fort and the legend of Billy the Kid, the site was once used by the U.S. Army as a base to control the Navajo and Apache tribes.
