Founded in the 9th century AD, the ancient city was once the center of scholarship and art in the Islamic world, and still retains its medieval urban pattern. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town (medina) of Fez is home to the world's first university, the University of Caraouine, the spectacular Caraouine Mosque, and traditional craftsmen's workshops, such as the famous Fez Leather Dyeing Factory. The winding alleyways, ancient architecture and rich Arabian flavor make Fez a great place to experience traditional Moroccan culture, attracting travelers from all over the world to explore the charm of its thousand years of history.
