Mili Atoll is an important atoll in the Ratak Chain of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, consisting of 92 small islands with a total land area of approximately 14.9 square kilometers and a lagoon area of 763 square kilometers. As one of the largest atolls in the RMI, its name "Mili" means "peace" in the Marshallese language, reflecting the serenity of the local natural environment.
Mili Atoll was occupied by the Japanese during World War II and was used as a military base. Remnants of the war such as gun emplacements and airplane wreckage remain today. The inhabitants of the atoll rely primarily on fishing and subsistence agriculture, and traditional canoe-making and navigation skills are listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage, reflecting the unique resilience of Micronesian civilization.
Surrounded by coral reefs, the atoll islands have mangrove ecosystems and important seabird habitats. Marine life such as hawksbill sea turtles and reef sharks can be seen in the surrounding waters, and the eastern area is designated as a marine reserve. Due to global sea level rise, the atolls are facing environmental challenges such as coastal erosion and freshwater shortages.
Connected to the capital city of Majuro by domestic flights, Miri Atoll is characterized by battle site diving and cultural experiences for traditional communities. The population of approximately 800 in 2023 is mainly concentrated on the main island of Miri. Atoll infrastructure is relatively limited and development is dependent on international climate assistance and sustainable fisheries cooperation programs.
