Dakar, the capital of the Republic of Senegal, is located in the westernmost tip of the African continent, Cape Verde Peninsula, is an important hub of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea routes, known as the "Gateway to West Africa". As the political, economic and cultural center of the country, Dakar is not only one of the busiest port cities in West Africa, but also a melting pot of diverse cultures, blending African traditions, Islamic civilization and colonial heritage. Iconic landmarks such as the Monument to the African Renaissance overlook the Atlantic Ocean, while the island of Gorée, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that bears witness to the history of the slave trade, speaks of a rich past.
