Cidade Velha, located on the southwestern coast of Santiago Island, is the oldest European colonial town in the country and an important hub for trade between Africa and the Americas during the Age of Sail. Founded by the Portuguese in the late 15th century and originally known as Lisbonia, it was once the center of the slave trade and a witness to the brutal history of the transatlantic slave trade. It witnessed the brutal history of the transatlantic slave trade. The remains of Portuguese colonial architecture from the 16th century are preserved in the city, including the ruins of the Cathedral of Sai, the first Catholic church in West Africa, the Slave Market Square, and the Fortaleza de São Filipe Castle, which illustrate the intersection of European, African, and indigenous cultures. Its unique Creole architecture and historical value have made it an important cultural landmark and tourist destination in Cape Verde.
São Tomé and Príncipe is an island country in west-central Africa, consisting of the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe and the surrounding islets, with the capital, São Tomé, located in the northeastern part of São Tomé. Located on the Gulf of Guinea, about 200 kilometers from the African continent, the country was colonized by Portugal in the 15th century and became independent in 1975, with Portuguese as the official language and an economy based on agriculture (cocoa, palm oil) and tourism. It should be noted that "Java" is not a city or region of the country; Java is the main island of Indonesia, with cities such as Jakarta and Surabaya, and has nothing to do with São Tomé and Príncipe, possibly due to a confusion of names.
