Introduction to Chongjin, North Korea

Cheongjin, the capital of North Hamgyong Province in North Korea, is an important port city and the second largest city in North Korea, located in the northeast of the country on the coast of the Sea of Japan. As an industrial center in the northern part of the DPRK, Chongjin has basic industries such as iron and steel, machinery, and chemicals, and has historically developed rapidly due to its rich mineral resources (e.g. coal and iron ore). Its port is an important window for the DPRK's foreign trade, undertaking some of the transportation of imported and exported goods. Located on the border between the DPRK and China and Russia, Chongjin is a geographically important city with a predominantly industrial layout, as well as regional administrative and commercial functions, making it a key node for the economy and transportation in northeastern DPRK.
