Biltine, Chad

Biltine is a city in eastern Chad, the capital of Ouaddai Province, located about 800 kilometers east of the capital N'Djamena, near the border with Sudan, and an important transportation and trade hub in the Sahel region. The city is located in a semi-arid climate zone and is surrounded by nomadic pastoralism and rough agriculture, with staple crops including millet, sorghum and groundnuts. As a regional administrative center, Biltine has basic infrastructure, but economic and social services are relatively limited due to Chad's overall level of development. Historically a node on the trans-Saharan trade route and still connected to Chad's border trade with Sudan, the region is multicultural and populated by predominantly Arab, Sara and other ethnic groups.
