Boiron is a town in the administrative district of Upper Bavaria in the German state of Bavaria, not an independent state. It is located about 50 kilometers south of Munich on the banks of the Isar River in the northern foothills of the Alps and has a population of about 3,500. The town is known for its rich history, its Catholic Benedictine abbey and its natural beauty.
The Abbey of Boiron, founded in the 8th century, is the central landmark of the area and is known for its Baroque architecture and collection of religious art. The town retains its traditional Bavarian houses, hosts annual Christmas markets and other folklore events, and is surrounded by forests and hills, making it ideal for hiking and cycling tours.
The economy is based on tourism, agriculture and small crafts, with easy access to Munich and the Austrian border by road and rail. Boiron embodies the tranquility and cultural heritage of the Bavarian countryside and is an ideal stopover for exploring the German pre-Alpine region.
Hedland (Haleyville), located in Winston County in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Alabama, about 160 kilometers north of Birmingham and close to the Tennessee border, is a small town with a community focus. Incorporated in 1889, the city sprang up as a result of the development of railroad transportation, and historically was the pilot city for the first 911 emergency telephone system in the United States (1968), an innovation that to this day influences emergency response systems across the country. Economically, the area is dominated by forestry, agriculture, and small-scale manufacturing, and is surrounded by natural landscapes and the William B. Bankhead National Forest for outdoor activities. With a population of approximately 4,000, there is a strong community atmosphere that retains the quiet qualities of a small southern town, while passing on unique local memories through amenities such as a history museum.
