Berbera is an important port city in northern Somalia, located on the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden, and is the capital and largest seaport of the Autonomous Republic of Somaliland. As a historic trading hub in East Africa, Berbera is strategically located as a natural deep-water harbor, and is a key node connecting the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean. The port's economy is based on fisheries, trade and logistics, and in recent years, through infrastructure upgrades, it has become a regional cargo transshipment center, which plays an important role in the economic development of Somalia and neighboring countries. The city's culture is a blend of Somali traditions and Arab characteristics, and its climate is hot and dry, making it an important economic and transportation gateway in the Horn of East Africa.
