New Moscow (Новая Москва) is a new administrative district formed in 2012 as a result of the large-scale expansion of the city of Moscow to the west and southwest, covering a total area of approximately 1,480 square kilometers and enlarging the city of Moscow to 2.4 times its original size. This major urban development project aims to reduce the pressure on population density in the center of the capital and create new poles of economic growth.
The New Moscow Region is located on the territory of the Moscow Oblast and integrates 21 municipalities in Troitsk and the southwestern part of the Oblast. Bordered by the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD) to the east and the Kaluga Oblast border to the west, the overall plan emphasizes a balance between ecological preservation and modern infrastructure.
As a national strategic project, New Moscow is positioned as a multifunctional complex: in the south, the focus is on science and innovation (Skolkovo Innovation Center Extension), while in the north, a large logistics hub and residential areas are planned. A government relocation program (some ministries have been relocated) has further increased the value of the area.
As of 2023, New Moscow will have a resident population of approximately 500,000, and is expected to accommodate 1.5 million residents in the future. Amenities including the extension of the "Commune" metro station, a network of tertiary healthcare facilities and Europe's largest indoor ski resort "SNOVA" have been built to create a "15-minute city" community model.
The area enjoys special tax incentives that have attracted major projects such as Gazprombank's data center and Microsoft's R&D facility. Real estate prices are 30-40% lower than in traditional urban areas of Moscow, making it a popular choice for young families and technology companies.
